Ideal Harvest Day vs. Reality

Basil keeps growing leaves until you have time.

In a perfect world, today would be harvest day.

Harvesting basil on schedule encourages low branching, improves airflow through the canopy, and frees up space for transplanting the next round of plants. The grower in me knows exactly what should happen today.

The reality is that I have other responsibilities, and there simply isn't time to harvest and turn the leaves into pesto.

Fortunately, basil is remarkably forgiving. Unlike a blister pack of herbs from the grocery store, the plant is still alive. The leaves stay fresh because they're still growing. As long as I keep an eye out for flower buds and pinch off any that appear, there is no emergency. Any buds I find will probably end up in garlic butter, and the main harvest can wait until Sunday.

Would I prefer to harvest today? Absolutely.

But one of the advantages of growing your own food is flexibility. The basil doesn't know what day is marked on my calendar. It will continue turning light, water, and nutrients into leaves while I handle the rest of life. When I finally harvest, the yield will be a little larger than it would have been today.

Sometimes gardening is about perfect timing. Sometimes it's about understanding how much room nature gives you when life gets busy.
